First Agape at Gibson Grove honors the covenant of 1898 that Sarah Gibson made with the Lord by rebuilding Gibson Grove Church where His Name can be glorified through worship, education, fellowship and mending the breach from the community through outreach and inclusiveness.

Our small congregation began as First A.M.E. Zion Church of Silver Spring. Thirteen years later, in February 2003, Gibson Grove Site, 7700 Seven Locks Road in Bethesda, Maryland became our church home.

Praise, Honor & Glory

If we Love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us.

First Agape was excited about inheriting a historic site. Gibson Grove is more than 104 years old and was the second oldest congregation in the Cabin John community.
It is named after Sarah Gibson, a former slave from Virginia who migrated to this area shortly after the Civil War. She and her family purchased 4.5 acres of land on Seven Locks Road.

Sarah Gibson saw the need of place to worship God in her community. As a demonstration of her faith and belief, she gave a portion of her land to the church for the purpose of worship in 1898. In 1923 the church was rebuilt on its present site. In January 1929 Mrs. Gibson died and was buried at Moses Hall.
